Introducing Google Page Creator

Google recently launched a new service called “Google Page Creator”:http://pages.google.com. It is an online service which allows the user to easily create web pages and hosting is thrown in for free. It has been called “GeoCities 2.0″, comparing it to Yahoo’s popular “GeoCities”:http://geocities.com/ which provides similar functionality.

In Google’s own words, “Google Page Creator is a free online tool that makes it easy for anyone to create and publish useful, attractive web pages in just minutes.” I can certainly vouch for that claim. I was able to log in with my Google account and set up “this site”:http://dannytam.googlepages.com/ within 5 minutes. It is really that easy.

At the heart of the system is the Page Creator tool which is basically a WYSIWYG web page builder which takes advantage of AJAX technology to speed things up. Changes are saved automatically. Also included in the package is the usual pre-built templates and themes to get the user started. To top it all off a 100MB storage is provided free of charge. No bandwidth limitation is mentioned on the website.

Google has another service called “Blogger”:http://www.blogger.com which offers an online blogging tool with free hosting. Unlike Blogger.com which focuses on the blogging platform, Page Creator is targetted at users who want a way to simply and quickly create and edit webpages without resorting to a blogging tool or content management system.
